SHELEY SECREST
Sheley Secrest is running for Position 8 on the City Council this year.
We have a very special guest for Monday night. Sheley is running city wide for City Council in a city that says it is committed to diversity, a city where the performance of African American students in the Public Schools is a major problem, and a city where a huge loss of the African American population led to defeat of an African American candidate running to represent the historic Central District.
Sheley Secrest chose MLK Jr. Day to start her campaign. Her focus is on disparities in areas such as income and education, and discrimination.
“I’m running because we need jobs, not jails,” Secrest said. “You want to know the solution to crime? It’s a job … What we need is more young people with jobs.”
As vice president of the Seattle NAACP, Secrest coordinates projects on enforcing Seattle’s labor laws and combating gentrification. She said she helped the NAACP push for the U.S. Department of Justice to pursue police reform in the city. She worked previously for The Urban League of Metropolitan Seattle .
As our guest, we see Sheley not in her capacity as a campaigner but as an activist who can give us a chance for more discussion about issues and opportunists. Secrest is one of several candidates running for Position 8. First out of the gate was housing activist Jon Grant, who lost to Burgess in 2015. Other hopefuls registered with the Seattle elections commission include Roger Kluck, Rudy Pantoja and Mac McGregor.
We will be happy to invite the other candidates,
