You see, a little less than six years ago, I was newly pregnant with twins, when my doctor told me that one of the fetuses had Trisomy 18—a genetic disorder that affects nearly every organ system in the body.2 Half of babies born with the disorder die within their first week of life; the median lifespan is five to 15 days.3 There’s a high risk of miscarriage or stillbirth with Trisomy 18—which put my other twin at risk, since I could go into labor very early or face other serious complications.
After my doctor explained my options and the risks, I made an anguished but clear decision to have a “selective reduction”—an abortion of the fetus with Trisomy 18, which would have been illegal under Pence’s law—to save my baby.
About seven months later, I delivered a healthy, nearly 9 pound baby girl. My daughter is now five years old. She is strong, kind, and sings constantly.
I don’t even want to think about what might have happened to her under Mike Pence’s vision for America. And we can’t ever let that come to pass. That’s why we have to do everything we can to keep Donald Trump out of the White House.”
I ask again: Is this the future you want for your daughters?
