The maddening thing about the Clinton e-mail Nontroversy is that there is a genuine problem with State Department technology practices: as the IG report showed, no one at DOS wants to use departmentally-approved equipment because it is outdated and inadequate. Clinton wanted a secure Blackberry and *was denied* because they could not provide it to her. As reporting by Kurt Eichenwald revealed, DOS Policy Planning Staff directorAnne-Marie Slaughter wrote to a head official begging for better equipment because no one could use departmentally approved laptops.
Why is this happening? I don’t know: I suspect it has a lot to do with a GOP Congress’ contempt for diplomacy in general and the State Department in particular. DOS has been starved for funding for years. But whatever the cause, it is an outrage. And now no one will give a damn because it won’t help a political agenda.
