The declaration of assets by Nigerian public office holders is a sham if we do not know the value of the assets declared. Sorry President Buhari and V President Osinbajo. All we need is to see your income taxes paid for the last three years. It would indicate the value of your assets. I am doubtful that both men ever paid taxes. The fact that it is not required by law makes it even more dubious for Buhari to brag about. This presents an opportunity for a man of integrity to ask the National Assembly to enact a law requiring all elected officials and anyone seeking public office from the local government, state government and federal government to provide income tax record certified by a chartered accountant showing taxes filed and paid for the previous five years prior to election or appointment. And whatever assets they owned must be certifiable to determine their true value. This would check the infiltration of rogues into public office.
