A millionaire insurance executive who provided equipment and fancy vacations to the Tulsa sheriff’s department in return for “reserve deputy” status, falsified training records, and being allowed to go on patrol with real officers was convicted of manslaughter by an all-white jury for shooting an unarmed black suspect to death during a bungled arrest. Robert Bates, 72, claimed he was reaching for his taser but grabbed his gun by mistake. During his trial, the defense attorney argued the victim died from the methamphetamines in his system, not the bullet Bates put in him. For some strange reason, the jury didn’t buy it.
