There are 3,994,795 registered voters in the State of Washington. The Democratic caucuses turned out a mere 5.6% of those registered voters. The population of the State of Washington is 7.17 million – so just 3.2% of the population participated. The Primary (not presidential) last August, in which we nearly set a record for low turnout at 31.3%, still managed to attract 1,239,674 voters – more than five times this year’s caucus turnout. Because, you know, math and data can prove a lot of things that reason and passion cannot: caucuses are undemocratic and exclusionary.
