GOP senator calls potential SCOTUS nominees “pinatas”

46680536.cachedIn a blatant effort to discourage potential Supreme Court candidates from accepting a nomination from President Obama, Sen. Jon Cornyn (R-TX), whose butt decorates a Senate Judiciary Committee chair (but serves no useful function), warned “they will bear some resemblance to a piñata” if they dare to come before the Senate for confirmation.

He told reporters, “What I don’t understand is how someone who actually wants to be confirmed to the Supreme Court would actually allow themselves to be used by the administration in a political fight that’s going to last from now until the end of the year.” (Read story here.)

Uh, well, if you want a seat on the Supreme Court, you have to be nominated by the president. That’s what the Constitution says, anyway. But the Republican position is, Constitution be damned, this president isn’t going to fill the vacancy left by Justice Scalia’s death. Not with anyone, no matter how well qualified, not even a Republican governor. Because, principle: You know, the conservative principle that says we’re going to obstruct everything Obama does because we don’t like him, the country be damned.

That’s what governance has descended to in America today. The only people who can change it are voters. Had enough yet? I have.
