Washington State has a history of being on the leading edge of progressive change: we gave women the right to vote in 1910, kicking off the successful national campaign; we decided to insure every child in the state in 2007, foreshadowing the ACA; we pioneered the fight for $15, which has become a national rallying cry.
But our state legislature is teetering on the brink of Republican control. We are the minority in the Senate and two seats away from losing the majority in the House. I don’t want Washington to become the next Wisconsin.
And there are absolutely critical issues that the state legislature needs to deal with around funding our schools, around our broken state tax system, around building an economy that helps the middle class thrive and grow, around converting to clean energy and addressing climate change.
So I’m in.
It’s swing district, but winnable. Obama got 56% of the vote in 2012; Cantwell got 58%; and we sent Mark Mullet to the State Senate. But Inslee got only 46%, and both current state house members are Republicans. It’s going to take a lot of work and a lot of shoe leather to win.
Feel inspired to help? I could certainly use it! The campaign website is up and running at http://www.darcyburner.com .
Richard Pope The race is definitely do-able. For best comparison, I would look at 2008 for Pos 2, where David Spring got 48.42%. (Hope you guys aren’t running against each other?) I expect Mark Mullet will get a lower percentage than 2012, since the R’s have a credible candidate this year (someone with alleged political conviction, instead of proven criminal convictions). Best wishes!
