Next Monday my family will be back in court. While my brother and sister are fighting to prevent my father’s pictures from Buchenwald becoming public, the pictures are fading and the remaining survivors will soon all be dead.
Perhaps Hugh and Stephanie do not understand how ephemeral such physical memories of the Holocaust really are? Perhaps they buy into Bill Quick, my brother in law, who claims that my Dad appropriated the pictures from the official Army photographers? Or maybe they are so full of hatred they just do not care about this heritage?
Maybe they should read the news from Poland where a right-wing party has risen to power, fueled in large part by anger over immigration and Syrian refugees but with the foul odor of Auschwitz. This is the same odor my Dad describes in the letter my brother and sister are blocking from publication. The Polish neo-Nazis mock those claiming to defend democracy as “the committee to defend Jewish-Communist wealth.”
