David Preston: Can we use social media to screen at our borders?

Before immigrating here, this evil woman had posted messages on social media saying that she supported violent jihad. We can assume that her husband had read these messages and knew about her feelings when he married her. There have been claims to the effect that he was radicalized by her, but as of now the FBI is reporting that was radicalized independently, before he met her.

As the NYT piece suggests, there will be some rights-obsessed people who claim that it is not appropriate for the INS to check social networks to determine whether prospective immigrants (specifically Muslim ones) support violent jihad. And yet, Mr. Obama and his supporters assure us that Syrian refugees will be undergoing an exhaustive screening process. I can’t think of any reason why a check on social networks couldn’t be part of that.
