Weather guru Cliff Mass has a new crusade: blocking the KUOW-KPLU deal. This could get interesting, for Mass is a bulldog, and both universities are somewhat on the defensive. One has to factor in how angry Mass was and is over his being booted off the KUOW show after insisting on political commentary as part of his weather forecasts. (KPLU quickly snapped him up.) I think he also misses that KUOW is undergoing a lot of changes, including the retirement of program director Jeff Hansen, the architect of many of the programming changes Mass deplores. Also, the short-segments format that KUOW has shifted to is pretty much standard at NPR stations these days (and at KPLU).
David,
The first thing a journalist must do is get the facts right….and your comments have some unfortunate errors.
I did not insist on any political commentary was part of my weather broadcasts. I never gave or wanted to give political commentary. I was kicked off for defending the UW’s admission’s policy on one show–check the facts, please. You are also mistaken that I didn’t know about Jeff Hansen leaving…I have for a long time. The take over of KPLU is well above his level….so he is not relevant to the issue of the moment. And some NPR affiliates do have long form shows, such as KPLU that has just added one on Saturday morning. Anyway, facts are important…cliff
