A large group of UW faculty, including many of our most eminent scientists, artists, and authors, have formed “UW Excellence” in opposition to the SEIU effort to organize a UW faculty union.
I have added my name t0 the list.
Like the other members of UW Excellence, I am doing this specifically out of opposition to the SEIU. I support unions. I believe it is critical that the UW Senate be strengthened and that the abuse of contingent and adjunct faculty be stopped. If the Senate can not do its job, we need a union.
My issue is the SEIU, I abhor its tactics.

The same SEIU chapter that is packing public meetings for Kshama Sawant and sending out huge amounts of mail using dark money is simply unfit to represent the UW faculty.
The SEIU on campus, in a group called “Faculty Forward,” has behaved very much as the SEIU has in Sawant’s campaign. Faculty Forward press releases and posters claiming to speak “for the faculty” are reminiscent of Sawant’s claims to speak “for the people.”
Finally, as in the use of dark money to elect Sawant, the “UW Faculty Forward” group and its finances remains anonymous.
