Figuring out skin color from ancient Egyptian or Mesopotamian statues of paintings is at best confusing. But we do have bones from those eras. Genomes can do better but skin color is determined by at least 4o different genes .. one reason that scientists reject the idea of “black” and “white” races. Now it turns out that melanin can be found in bones as old as 3 million years!
