A mass shooting at Umpqua Community College near Roseburg, Oregon, triggered a disaster-level response this morning in the central Oregon community just off Interstate 5. Victims were being taken to hospitals in Roseburg, Eugene, and Springfield. The state attorney general told news media that 13 people were killed and 2o wounded, many critically, but later those figures were revised downward to 10 dead (including the gunman) and 7 wounded (3 critically). The local sheriff says the shooter was killed by police. The incident began in a classroom shortly after 10:30 a.m.; according to a witness quoted by the Roseburg newspaper, the shooter ordered students to stand up, “state their religion,” and then began shooting. Maybe now, can we finally have rational public discourse about too-easy access to guns in this country? Please?
Photo: CBS News identified Chris Harper Mercer, 26, as the shooter. Mercer’s online dating profile said he was never married, in college, living with his parents, was a Republican, not religious, and didn’t smoke, drink or do drugs.
