Instead of disregarding the fact that 93% of all homicides committed against African Americans are committed by another African American. We should acknowledge it.
Why not make that an issue that the Black Lives Matter movement looks to address?
It seems ridiculous not to hold all people that kill Black people accountable. We can not continue to filter facts. Arguing that all “races” kill their own by highlighting statistics actually weakens the Black Lives Movement. The movement would be stronger if it denounced the African Americans that have also unjustly murdered Black men.
It does not happen, because we are hell bent on screaming racism, and if we highlight the 5,000+ murders committed by Black men last year, compared to the 200-300 murders committed by the police, racism will no longer be the main focus. Racism, actually plays a much larger role when comparing how Black people are punished for violent crimes compared to how white people are punished.
This is not to say that the police, which have a long tradition of terrorizing the African American community and hate groups are not an issue, but they are not the main culprits.
We can continue to point out that of all causes of death, homicides claimed about 40 percent of African American lives between 15 and 34 years. African Americans are more than twice as likely to die from gun violence than whites, but we cant continue to neglect the fact it is our own kind doing most of the killing.
Regardless of the root causes, regardless of statistics, Tupac Shakur said it best “…Use your brains! It ain’t them that’s killing us, it’s us that’s killing us… ”
Marching and protesting is not wrong, but it will not be fully effective until we also address the violence that we inflict upon ourselves.
