Univision, the U.S.’s largest Spanish-language broadcaster, has terminated its business relationships — including its Miss USA telecast — with Donald Trump because of his disparaging remarks about Mexicans in his presidential candidate announcement speech.
Trump said, “They’re bringing drugs, they’re bringing crime, they’re rapists,” adding, “and some, I assume, are good people.” Faced with criticism, he went on Fox News today to insist he’s standing by his remarks, which appeared calculated to play to the GOP’s anti-immigrant supporters.
It isn’t just Univision that’s dumping Trump. CNN reports, “Shortly after Univision pulled the plug on Trump, the man who was scheduled to be the Hispanic host of the Miss USA pageant also quit. In a statement addressed to Trump, Cristian de la Fuente, a popular actor from Chile who has appeared in TV shows like ‘CSI Miami’ and ‘Ugly Betty,’ said, ‘You are ignorant, racist and anti-Hispanic.'”
Trump responded in Trump-like fashion by promising to sue Univision for breaking a 5-year contract with the Miss USA organization, which Trump co-owns, that was signed just 5 months ago.
