Remembering the Dead of a Shameful War

Charleston’s celebration of its horrible history does not end with the exuberant display of the the Stars and Bars.  The home of the confederacy even has a memorial to Nazi POWs who were interned there in WWII.

Ironically, this memorial ended up on the property of a Jewish family.  When the family tried to tear the thing down, they were opposed by the neighbors.  The memorial still sits there. The case went to court and the Jews won.  They offered the monument (chronically a chimney, that dreadful symbol reminiscent of Auschwitz, to the community who wanted it preserved but so far there are no takers.
