Upsetting

You can not be an advocate for the Black community if you are intimate with people of other ethnicities.

Wow, really?  You have to be kidding me.   Its disappointing that some African Americans feel this way.

Emmett Louis Till was an African-American teenager who was murdered in Mississippi at the age of 14 after reportedly flirting with a white woman. To act like events like this did not shape our thought process about what is and what is not acceptable behavior when Black people deal with other ethnicities.

This made me upset even before I had children of my own.  This thought process would negate all that my mom has done over the last 25 years of her life.  My mother, a proud Black woman who married a Filipino man when I was 3 years old, can not be an advocate for the Black community according to this thought process.  That is bullshit.  My mom has worked extremely hard to get to where she is at, and has made a point to help out African Americans receive employment opportunities at all of the positions that she has worked during her time with the City, County and State.  She has worked her way up to become a gate keeper that now is in a position to open the gate for other African Americans, that are looking for employment opportunities in her field.  She has faced discrimination because she is black, she has dealt with racism as a result of being black.  Marrying a Filipino man did not make her life easier.  I can not stand reading and hearing stupid comments that do not make sense biologically, nor does it make any sense socially speaking.

This is some of the family that my mother married into. This is my family. For people to even think that I would allow them to make me feel less black because I have Filipino family members is insane. I may have a different view on society as a result of growing up around more than just black people, but that does not mean that I have not experienced being black and treated as such. Everyone in this picture can speak about discrimination. Some of the people in this picture have stood side by side with black people fighting against social injustice and discrimination. Growing up I noticed more similarities than differences between my Black and Filipino family members. I have watched Black people used derogatory terms towards my Filipino family members, and I have witnessed and felt Bigotry from Filipinos. There is not one group that is perfect or immune to racism and bigotry.

I understand that this unwritten anti-miscegenation law stems from the long history of hatred and discrimination that African Americans have faced solely on the basis of skin color.  I still do not agree with it.  African American’s can not continue to fight against bigotry and discrimination on the basis of race, embracing and practicing some of the  main tenets of Jim Crow  that helped to maintain Racism.

The negative images and the misconceptions that we see of black women in the media also lead to resentment from the African American community towards anything that is not black.  That still does not mean that one should limit their love interests to one group of people.  I do not judge anyone who chooses to think like that, just do not make others feel less than for being more open minded about the people they choose to be intimate with.  People have the right to love whoever they choose to love.

My oldest son is Italian/Mexican/African American. His mother is Italian and Mexican. My two younger children who have a different mother are African American/Norwegian(white). I will not be made to feel less than because of who I choose to love and be intimate with. I will not accept that thought process.
