With mountain snowpack at 5% of average, California Gov. Jerry Brown today issued an executive order imposing emergency water restrictions on the entire state. “Similar measures were considered during California’s 1970s drought but were never implemented,” CNBC reported.
Despite severe water shortages throughout the state, Brown likely will have to actively build political support for his move, given that “most residents have said they prefer voluntary cuts in water use to government-ordered rationing, with 34 percent saying mandatory measures should be taken in a Field Poll released in February.”
