Republicans, after snubbing the 50th anniversary commemoration of Selma’s history-making civil rights marches, have decided to send newly chosen House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) as their token dignitary. Apparently no southern Republican stepped up to the task. It will be interesting to see if any of the putative Republican presidential candidates or either of Alabama’s senators deign to appear.
A number of lower ranked Republicans are attending. Sen. Tim Scott, a South Carolina Republican .. the GOP’s exemplar of “we can be black too” is a co-sponsor of the event . 23 Republican House and Senate members are registered to attend the pilgrimage
Former President George W. Bush and wife Laura will be attending, too. It is not clear whether the Clintons, who attended the even when she last ran for President, will not appear.
Key word here is token
