Expanding on his assertion that President Obama is un-American, Republican politician and unsuccessful presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani explained that Obama’s opposition to torture “undermines” our security:
“But I can only be disheartened when I hear him claim, as he did last August, that our response to 9/11 betrayed the ideals of this country. When he interjected that ‘we tortured some folks,’ he undermined those who managed successfully to protect us from further attack,” Giuliani wrote in a New York Times op-ed (as reported by Daily Kos; the op-ed is available online only to NYT subscribers).
Okay, I see what’s going on here. If you criticize Republicans for torturing people (some of them innocent) and lying about it, you’re “undermining our security” and that makes you un-American. We’ve seen this song and dance before. When Republican warmongers launched their unprovoked attack on Iraq in 2003, they called anyone who questioned it “unpatriotic.”
