Riddle me this .. is Leschi Eligible for Sainthood?
Sainthood, according to Christians, is awarded by their God to those who lead valiant lives on the service of God’s will.
The founding Governor of our state, Isaac Stephens, wrote in his diary that he knew that putting the indigenes of this land into reservations would kill them off. Governor Stephens was a devout Christian. Unlike Jefferson, why considered the American Indian a noble people, I believe Stephens did not consider the peoples here to be fully human and thought this was their fate determined by his God.
Do you suppose Stephens went to his death (as a civil war hero) knowing he was forgiven?
Next Thursday is the 57th anniversary of Leschi’s execution. Is he in Christian heaven? If someone reports a miracle, will Pope Frnacis name Leschi a Saint?
