An angry white man is in jail awaiting arraignment on murder charges
following the execution-style slayings of a Muslim couple and the wife’s sister in a North Carolina college town last night.
Craig Stephen Hicks, 46, turned himself in to police after allegedly shooting Deah Shaddy Barakat, 23, his wife, Yusor Mohammad, 21, and her sister, Razan Mohammad Abu-Salha, 19. All three victims were shot in the head.
They were all neighbors in a condo complex in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, near the University of North Carolina campus. Most of the complex’s residents were students or professionals. Hicks was studying for a paralegal certification at a nearby technical college; Barakat was a dental student at UNC, and his wife and her sister also were students at a state college.
Authorities said a parking dispute may have sparked the incident, but are investigating the case as a possible hate crime. The victims were Muslims, and wore Muslim clothing; Hicks had posted anti-religious rants on the internet.
