“The manner of death of a woman who died in Cleveland police custody has been ruled a homicide. … Tanisha Anderson died Nov. 12 … in the custody of officers while having a mental-health episode. Relatives say the 37-year-old was schizophrenic and claim an officer used excessive force. … Last month, the U.S. Justice Department released findings from a nearly two-year investigation of [Cleveland police]. The department concluded that officers use excessive and unnecessary force far too often.”

Just 10 days after Tanisha Anderson’s death, a rookie Cleveland cop gunned down a 12-year-old for playing with a toy gun in a public park. These are just two of a spate of cases involving police violence against unarmed black people. But police unions, instead of expressing concern or remorse, have reacted by blaming the deaths of police officers on citizens protesting against police violence, and criticizing politicians for allowing those citizens to exercise their constitutional rights.
Violent cops, and the aggressive police unions that defend them, have more than a public relations problem. They have a serious attitude problem.
