Is my Dog Part Fox?

Hmm … if we humans make mistakes about species, how the hell can we claim to identify races?

I can’t help wondering at how much our new Shiba puppy looks like a fox. I know that the Shiba has a genome that is 80% wolf, but what does science say? fox

A fox and a wolf could theoretically mate, had they the inclination, but they could not produce young – they are too distantly related. Whilst both are members of the dog family, Canidae, the lines which produced them diverged millions of years ago, and they no longer share enough genetic material for the sperm of one to fertilise the egg of the other. The three species of wolf all belong to the genus Canis, whilst the various fox species belong to several different genera including Vulpes, Dusicyon and Urocyon.
