What If They Built That Pipeline And No Barrels Came?

Now that Keystone XL is no longer economically viable because of falling oil prices, several Democrats in Congress have agreed to join with Republicans in approving its construction. But what good is a pipeline for oil that costs more to produce than it sells for?  This isn’t the first time this has happened.  During her brief stint as Alaska’s governor, Sarah Palin pushed for a natural gas pipeline that was never built after the fracking revolution caused natural gas prices to drop by two-thirds and remain low.

Perhaps the pipeline company should thank Democrats for saving them from building an expensive white elephant by writing a nice check to the Democratic Campaign Committee.  Or maybe they’ll find alternative uses for the pipeline, e.g., transporting milk, cow farts, or politicians’ hot air.  I’m guessing they have a plentiful supply of all three of these commodities in Canada, just as we do here in the States.Roger Rabbit icon
