Cuba among the top tourist destinations
On September 23, Cuba was recognized as a top international tourist destination at an event in Brazil to decide the best tourist executives, companies and destinations in 2014, according to the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Relations website.
Nélida Hernández Carmona, Cuban consul general in Sao Paulo, received the honor awarded to the island, highlighting the work done by the Cuban Ministry of Tourism in developing promotional tourism strategies directed toward the Brazilian market, as well as Brazilian airlines and travel agencies and institutions.
Hernández added that under the coordination of the Brazilian Association of Tour Operators (Braztoa), the Cuba Tourism Week gave the opportunity to promote new destinations in Cuba and developments in the non-hotel sector.
“This award is was way of honoring Cuba, given its tourist and commercial achievements, its capacity for innovation and creativity and for being the destination which clients are always satisfied with,” said Roberto Silva, President of Sanchattour, leading agency in selling Cuba as a destination.
Personalities from the sector, flight and hotel companies, and travel operators also received awards.
HAVANA, FINALIST AMONG WONDER CITIES OF THE WORLD
A report by New7Wonders Cities stated that its decision panel chose Havana, together with 20 other world cities, as a finalist in the Wonder Cities of the World competition. The competition was organized by the Swiss company New7Wonders, which opened an online voting system in 2007 to select the New Wonders of the World.
According to Bernand Weber, President and founder of the organization, the selected cities are renowned for their diversity, uniqueness in terms of geographic location and urban culture. The competition is currently in its penultimate stage with 21 official contenders. The final phase will run from October 7 through December 7, 2014, when the Seven Wonder Cities of the World will be revealed.
