BEIJING, June 28 (Xinhua) — Chinese President Xi Jinping on Saturday warned against attempts to establish a dominant civilization in the world.
“We should champion inclusiveness and mutual learning,” Xi said when delivering a keynote speech at a commemoration marking the 60th anniversary of the Five Principles of Peaceful Coexistence at the Great Hall of the People in downtown Beijing, urging the international community to carry forward the principles to build a new type of international relations.
In 1954, leaders of China, India and Myanmar initiated the Five Principles, including mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other’s internal affairs, equality and mutual benefit, and peaceful coexistence.
Xi said diversity of civilization is a defining feature of the human society.
In today’s world, there are seven billion people of more than 2,500 ethnic groups who live in over 200 countries and regions and speak more than 5,000 languages, said the Chinese leader, adding that different nations and civilizations are rich in diversity and have their own distinct features.
“No one is superior or inferior to others,” Xi said.
“We should respect diversity of civilizations and promote exchanges, dialogue, peaceful and harmonious coexistence among different civilizations and nations,” he added.
Xi said human history has proved that any attempt to establish a dominant civilization in the world is an illusion.
“We should promote mutual learning and draw on all that is good created by different countries, nations and civilizations in a joint effort to create a splendid human civilization,” said the Chinese president.
