US warship makes housecall for sick baby at sea
Charlotte and Eric Kaufman were hundreds of miles off the Mexican coast, two weeks into sailing around the world when they called for help after their one-year-old girl fell ill. A a four-member team of the California Air National Guard parachuted into the water and reached the boat on April 3. The baby was air evac’d to a Navy Destroyer where she stabilized.
This was not the first challenge the Kaufmans have faced since buying their boat in 2005 Back then when they began their circumnavigation, Mrs Kaufman was pregnant with their second child. In one blog post, Mrs Kaufman wrote: ‘I think this may be the stupidest thing we have ever done,’ as she described the difficulty of trying to hand wash poopy diapers. That rip ended in morning sickness.
Eric Kaufman is a coastguard-licensed captain who introduced sailing to his future wife. There was no immediate word of whether the Kaufmans would pay a deductible for this extraordinary benefit of Obamacare. Presumably the Rebel Heart continues on its way.
