Which Professions Have The Most Psychopaths?

ANITexasChainsawMassacreWe don’t have to wonder anymore, thanks to Time magazine (with a hat tip to CBS News, who tipped me off to this story).

Let’s start with a definition:

“Psychopathy is a personality disorder that has been variously described as characterized by shallow emotions (in particular reduced fear), stress tolerance, lacking empathy, coldheartedness, lacking guilt, egocentricity, superficial character, manipulativeness, irresponsibility, impulsivity and antisocial behaviors such as parasitic lifestyle and criminality.” (Quoting Time magazine, who quoted Wikipedia)

Now the list:

Professions with the most psychopaths:

1. CEO
2. Lawyer
3. Media (TV/radio)
4. Salesperson
5. Surgeon
6. Journalist
7. Police officer
8. Clergyman
9. Chef
10. Civil servant

Professions with the least psychopaths:

1. Care aide
2. Nurse
3. Therapist
4. Craftsperson
5. Beautician/stylist
6. Charity worker
7. Teacher
8. Creative artist
9. Doctor
10. Accountant

I’m not kidding, I didn’t make this up, and I don’t know who did, though some of it sounds like b.s. to me. For example, I know a couple of lawyers who aren’t psychopaths, and I can think of doctors who are, but I’ m not naming any names here. And I don’t understand why “neighbors” were left off the list.  My experience with journalists and artists is they tend to be neurotic, but not psychotic, although I wouldn’t turn my back on them if they’re working with a chainsaw. I don’t know much about teaching, but I get the impression the average elementary or junior high classroom can turn laid-back ladies into serial killers, or at least plant the idea in their heads.  High schools are less of a problem because most of the kids are stoned.  The #1 ranking given CEOs is a no-brainer; these guys didn’t get where they are by being warm and fluffy. As for me, I’m as warm, fluffy, and cuddly as bunnies come, if you keep me well fed with fresh crisp lettuce; but if you go away and forget to put out my food dish, you’ve got problems.  That noise you hear is …
