South Carolina, with what may be the worst record of any state in the union, will celebrate the civil war this weekend.
Slavery, as horrible as it was elsewhere in the South, reached its peak in South Carolina where there were intentional efforts to breed a better slave by crossing African slaves with Cherokee slaves. Even today many African-Americans have Cherokee roots dating back to this horrible experiment.
That crime against humanity presaged later events when South Carolina threatened to secede because Andrew Jackson wasn’t aggressive enough in the extermination of the state’s Native Americans .
True to its roots, the state was the home for the first shots fired in the Civil War on war that many in South Carolina still call the war of secession.
The deepest roots of the KKK appear to be in a Masonic order founded by Jews in Charleston South Carolina. The foul odor of this racism still flies in the form of a Confederate flag, no longer flying over the capital because too many people refuse to come to South Carolina to see that. That horrible flag, however still flies in front of the capital at a monument to the noble Confederate soldiers. As a Jew, I wonder how my fellow Jews in South Carolina would feel if on visiting Berlin when they found the Nazi flag waving before the memorial to unknown World War II soldiers?
Today, South Carolina is one of very few states that doesn’t even have its own minimum wage . Presumably, if it were not for federal law, wage slavery would be the law in South Carolina.
Of course other states have their own grim histories. The shame is widespread especially in the South but not only in the South. Even here in Seattle, very few citizens remember the heroism of Chief Leschi. Even when other natives were acquiescing to what they saw as inevitable fate , this hero led an assault on the timber walls of the fortress which was then Seattle. He won, a couple of soldiers on the barricade died. The settlers tried the chief in absentia and later caught him and hanged him. There is, however, the difference in scale.
I do not think many of my fellow citizens of the state are proud of that history.

What in the world does this have to do with the stated purpose of your blog (see the ABOUT header, above) “The Ave is a venue for open discussion about the UW and other universities.
motto: of campus but off campus
Contributors to the Ave are uncensored.
To become a Contributor, contact one of our editors. We welcome Contributors from the UW community, citizens and others interested in university education, politicians, students, and anyone committed to rational and open discussion of the many roles universities serve in our society. All rational points of view, limited only by good taste, are welcome.
The Ave is hosted privately because Washington State law prohibits political discussion using campus facilities. We hope this means political and other community leaders will feel free to use this forum as a place to speak their minds.”
It clearly has nothing to do with UW. It’s only meant to continue the mean-spirited vicious attacks on your siblings and their spouses.
