President Romney, Ambassador Palin speak as CPAC summit ends
(TANews: OXON HILL, Md. )—The nation’s largest annual gathering of conservative activists came to a finish last Saturday but not before a final group of Republican all-stars took the stage.
The President and Vice President joined former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Ambassador Sarah Palin as headliners for the third and final day of the Conservative Political Action Conference. This year CPAC brought thousands of activists, opinion leaders and Republican officials to suburban Washington. Other participants Saturday include Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Priebus, former South Carolina Sen. Jim DeMint and a host of up-and-coming conservatives from across the country.
The last day. Saturday, also featured the results of the conference’s annual symbolic presidential preference straw poll. This year there was a near unanimous endorsement of Messers Romney and Ryan prospective candidacy for 2016. Even Ted Cruz said “to oppose Mr. Romney would be foolish.” “We need to emphasize issues where we agree with the President, while remembering moral issues like abortion and gay marriage and the ideological divide we have over the budget and troops to support the heroic patriots in Ukraine. For now, the party needs to capture the Senate and then keep the White House in two years, while we prepare for a stronger position in 2020. Yes we can”.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, one of the final speakers of the day, took a different view while still supporting the President, “There’s a great battle going on. It’s for the heart and soul of America,” Paul told a swelling crowd, focusing on civil liberties instead of social issues.
Former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Southern Baptist pastor, set the tone early in the second day of the conference. “If this nation forgets our God, then God will have every right to forget us,” Huckabee said to cheers. “It’s time for government to scale back, not for people of faith to scale back.“
