UPDATE: Boeing’s Workers Vote 51% YES
Now that the Machinists union accepted Boeing’s contract proposal, I dare WA STATE to go one further … Though the vote was only 51 percent, the effects will be massive. Seattle now has the ability to fight to remain a leader in aerospace and needs to work to attract more diverse companies .. Airbus, Aerospace or Brazil’s Embraer?
Why aren’t we building Boeing’s new space shuttle here?

@BrackFridayBunduru: Reporter Coral Garnick was told the delay in Everett was because they DID mail out voter eligibility cards and too many people didn’t bring them, causing the lines.
The Seattle Times Blog: Machinists have been standing in line for hours to vote in Everett today, unlike November when the lines moved quickly. With only two volunteers stationed at computers inside the union hall to ensure machinists are eligible to vote, the line has weaved out the door and through the parking lot all afternoon. Those who received […]

Looks like everyone won… except the local union leadership. Those were the guys with the least to lose and the most to gain by trying to play macho: “Heads we win, tails you lose!”
Maybe it’s time those guys lost something!
Thank God the national leadership had the mind to represent the local membership in their decisions to let an election happen immediately. Brilliant work on both sides to meet halfway.

Let’s get back to work, and build a great airplane. This doesn’t mean we’ve lost the war. We’re (SPEEA and IAM) going to be here a while…
Maria Aflleja, 25, a 6-yr
#Boeing worker on the 787, is the last person in line in Everett. She’ll get to vote in about 30 mins.

@Scott R…. If I could afford to worry about your house, the local econmy and other businesses, I would ratify this contract! Hwever, I am trying to protect my years of service to be able to enjoy if not at least survive in retirement you Moron!. … Unfortunately, I will not get 265k a month when I retire…. So its about what we have done for this company and what the CEOs and stockholders reap the rewards. How about rying to sustain a moderate way of life after working for so many years? Deserved..No, Earned!

There is just no way the vote is going to swing 17%… It will be close, but it will be NO!

I am a IAM751 member in Everett and I voted YES to save jobs in the Puget Sound and to give my unemployed wife more opportunity for work in the area.
@Brian Gibson: This is exactly what I tell people. It’s weird how people cry “What? My pension’s going to be different? What about future generations!?” as if having a pension has anything to do with having a JOB. I hope this thing passes. Building the composite wings here, training our workers to be able to build what is essentially the next big thing, developmentally, will be so good for us.

why don’t the machinists want this huge project, why should others get it, who are nowhere close to as deserving as the Boeing employees, please (or am I stupid)

6 PM “10 mins until the polls close and 250+ people are still in line in Everett. They won’t start counting until everyone has voted”
That’s good. One way or the other, I do hope everyone gets to have their vote.

Pensions made sense when there were 3-4 young workers for every old worker and people lived till 65. Now, with people pushing over 80 years or longer, you have people spending more time in retirement than not. Companies can no longer afford pensions.

The new VIP with the company matching 6% on the employee’s 8% plus a special company contribution of 10% 10% 6% and 4% every year after in the employees 401K is a great benefit and far superior to the 401k we have now.

So Frank, rather than accepting a decent retirement and healthy wage, you’d rather look for another job, that offers what exactly for someone who’ almost 70? Of course you would sell out all the younger workers a chance to have a job so you can keep your pension. Solidarity at its finest.

A 20 Year worker will have a pension of $21840/yr. That is not much, So what’s all the crying about. You won’t be able to live on that anyway. Better have other sources of Income. Boeing will up the VIP contribution to 75%. In the 7 years I’ve worked here, I’m within 12 cents of my pay going up 100%. In the last few years pay increased by 22%. And 4% more pending if this passes. I think that surpasses inflation. 26% total
