WWJMD… what would Mandela do (in Israel/Palestine?)
Mr. Carter will, in my opinion, emerge as one of America’s great presidents. He gets dissed by the Repricans as part of their effort to lionize Reagan, to pretend that their senile old man ended the cold war, to ignore the war crimes in Nicaragua and to turn a blind eye to the lasting economic harm Reaganomics has done to our ability to compete in a world of open markets.
As for the USSR, it was Carter’s innovation, the development of small elite military groups and mobile naval forces that demonstrated the fragility of the USSR’s WWII style military. Reagan changed all that by relaunching antique battleships, one of which lobbed shells at Lebanon as terrorists freely killed US marines.,
Carter’s efforts to turn the US toward green energy, overturned and ridiculed by the Luddite Reagan, deserve the awe of all of living through the horror of global warming.
Oh yeh, like Mandela Mr. Carter won a Nobel Peace Prize!
Mandela and Carter shared a lot more, including the effort each made to see a path for Palestinians and Israels to undergo the sort of reconciliation that Mandela brought to Apartheid infected South Africa. Is it possible that Mr, Carter, Mr. Obama, Mr. Netanyahu and Mr. Abbas might find this funeral an occasion to make peace in Israel?
