SUNDAY REVELATIONS: Israel army deletes God from memorial prayer

Vos is Neias? reported last Spring that the Israeli Defence Forces will remove the gods (Elohim) from the IDF’s prayer recited in military cemeteries.

Elohim in Hebrew means “gods” but is used in the Torah to refer to God interchangeable with the word spelled yod heh vov heh. Modern scholars believe this reflects the Jews’ worship of more gods before strict monotheism became the rule perhaps 2500 years ago just before the Babylonian exiles in the time of King Josiah.

The dispute centered around whether the words “Yizkor Elohim” (“May God remember” ) or “Yizkor Am Yisrael” (“May the nation of Israel remember” ) should be used.  A secular bereaved mother objected to “Yizkor Elohim” and  the second version won out.
