I conveyed your thoughts to the cadet, along with a few of my own, including
the history of Mithras, he seemed a bit unsure and told me he would think
about it.
I have been having a bit more luck undermining his right wing outlook, since
this industry is heavily unionized I’ve been giving him a bit of a crash
course in labor history, of course he knew none of this but then most people
in the U.S. don’t know labor history, I find it appalling that almost
everyone knows who Henry Ford was, but almost no one knows who Bill Heywood
or Sam Gompers were. As I said in an earlier letter I did lead the cadet
into admitting that socialized medicine would be a good thing.I expect to be back in Seattle either the first part of march, or sometime
in April, when I took this job off the board I had planned to stay three
trips, roughly 6 months, but when I got here I learned that the ship is
going to the yards for overhaul in may, the yard will be in Hong Kong, so
I’m not sure if one month’s pay is worth a 14 hour plane ride, I’ll keep you
posted.
And yes I have a camera, so I will take some pictures of Singapore for you,
though Singapore doesn’t look too different than New York.
The weather is hot and humid, and will get more humid as we get closer to
Singapore, but the’s what I expected.
This ship seems to have more than it’s share of rusted hand-rails out on
deck, but since welding and fabricating are my jurisdiction, that lets me
spend my afternoons out on deck instead of in the engine room. Apart from
that I have not much news.
