I am thrilled.

Charter-school initiative has slim lead

Sadly, I predict this will fail. I say sadly because I think the failure reflects racism. Over the last few days of the election I received multiple phone calls, all falsely claiming that charters schools … schools that use no more funds than any other public school … would take funds form the “public” schools that cold be used to educate bBlack kids. One call even came from a supposedly Black educator. The bottom line was the implication that poor parents an d esp. poor Black parents ought not to be able to choose schools the way better off folks do.

Initiative 1240, the charter-school initiative, is likely to lose.

The charter-school initiative held a slight statewide lead Tuesday because it passed  outside Seattle in iClark, Pierce and Snohomish.and Spokane. Statewide, it was passing with about 51 percent of the vote.

It is losing here and will lose statewide because County accounts for about a third of the remaining votes statewide.

But the No on 1240 campaign was elated that the results remained so close given that they were outspent by about $10 million.

“We did a lot of mail and phone calls the last week and a half, and we think that’s having an impact,” said Marianne Bichsel, spokeswoman for People for Our Public Schools.
