The elder Oparowskis were contacted two weeks ago by Romney’s son, Taggart Romney, who asked if they would be willing to come to Tampa and speak about the time that Mitt Romney was there for their son.
Peter Oparowski said his parents agreed and flew to Tampa on Wednesday. He said they wrote up their speeches in advance and received help from the Romney campaign “abridging” what they would say.
He said his family first got to know the Romneys in the early 1970s, and he occasionally had been a babysitter for Romney’s children. He said he last spoke to Romney in 1995.
Then, the interview goes off message.
[Oparowski] said his parents support Romney’s bid for the White House — but that he does not. Peter Oparowski works for the state of Vermont as a technician with the Public Safety Department.
“I’m a union member,” he said. “I think he represents both the best and the worst of corporate greed. He’s certainly not in favor of the working class.”
