Charlie Christ, the former Republican governor of Florida who ran for the Senate as an independent, will speak at the Democratic National Convention next week, taking yet another step away from his erstwhile party.
This is far more important than it may seem. Mr. Cristy is not just a Republican ousted by the Tea 
Party. Christy is (or was) a highly respected member member of what used to be called the Republican core. His ilk included people like John McCain, Steve Balmer, Susan Collins, Meg Whitman, George Will, Tommy Thompson, Oren Hatch, John Huntsman … business oriented Republicans who understand that what is good for America is good for their businesses .. rather than the other way around. This same residual world of rational republicans must react in horror as the draconian approach of Ryanomics, Mitt’s posturing on Iran, the weird ideas about a gold standard, climate change denial, and the intrusion of the state into the vagina.
Could this be a beginning of a realignment of moderate, rationalists to retake the center? At a minimum this may be part of the Obama campaign’s effort to teach America just how radical Romney Ryan is?.
