Israel Unity Gov’t Collapses, Romney may pay the Price!
The national Unity government formed in Israel months ago has collapsed, after Shaul Mofaz, head of the Kadima Party, pulled out of talks with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Mofaz cited differences over the universal draft law. The unity government hit a wall when trying to decide on regulations for drafting ultra-Orthodox Jews and Arabs. It’s unclear whether there will be early elections now.
The implications for Israel’s cheridim are very real. Without a new law passed by August 1, there will be no legal framework for yeshiva students to remain in full time-learning, after August 1 the decision on whether to draft the charedim will be up to Ehud Barak, the liberal defense minister.
The even effects Mitt Romney. Romney and his sons have used the religious exemption for Mormon males, all of whom clam to be priests, to exempt themselves from American military service. The Republican has announced plans to visit his buddy, Netanyahu, in the next coupe of weeks. Imagine how Mr. Romney would field the obvious question at a press conference!
