HIGHLY recommended read for anyone who wants some insight into what is happening and may happen in Egypt. My take is that Egypt today is rather like Ataturk’s Turkey after WWI. While not a democracy, the central power of the military is now balanced by the political clout of the parties. These parties are likely contending for alliances with the military while the military itself may be changing due to Egypt’s own version of the young Turks.
I think this is promising. From what Fisk and others write, it is hard to see a resurgence of a totalitarian regime, especially one driven by a theocracy like the one in Iran. Nether the public not the military would accept that. The best we can hope for is a regime of technocrats, devoted to stabilizing Egypt long enough to let democracy do its own thing. Central to this may be finding a way to get the military to divest its huge stake in the economy ,,, as high as 1/3 from my reading!
If that can happen, then I would hope that a non military establishment will come to be, hopefully more open then the one that today rules China!
Some “foxes” would call that “democracy.”
