EGYPT’S NEW ERA
Muslim Brotherhood Candidate Declared Country’s New President
After Years In The Shadows, Islamic Group Vows Islamist Democracy
While many Jews and Americans are frightened of the word “Islamic” I am impressed with Reza Aslan’s argument that the extremism associated with the Brotherhood is the result of their being forced into the underground by Mubarak.
Islamic Democracy is no scarier to me than “Christian Democracy” or the fundamentalist leanings of India’s Hindu Party, the Janata). None of these are as frightening as the religiosity of America’s Christian extremists.
In democracy there is hope. Islam has had all too few opportunities to show that it can evolve its version fo a democratic society. Today Egypt joins Tunisia, Libya, Indonesia, Bangladesh, in that great experiment.
