What’s in a Name? For Yale in Singapore, a Whole Lot

The Chronicle of Higher Education reportsa fight between memebers of the Yale faculty and the administration over who owns the “Yale ” brand name.
After the World Economic Forum in Davos, in January 2009, Richard C. Levin, president of Yale University, and Tan Chorh Chuan, president of the National University of Singapore, began discussing creation of the first liberal-arts college in the island nation, now to be called Yale-NUS College.
This April, Yale’s arts-and-science faculty approved a resolution expressing concern over Singapore’s record on civil and political liberties. President Levin says he “consulted” with selected faculty. however the administrators insists that faculty don’t get an up-or-down vote on the project.
Supposedly, Yale-NUS College will not offer a “Yale” degree. I suppose then the Yale would have no problem if Liberty University wanted to offer the Yale at Liberty degree?
“I don’t think the president has the authority to create something called Yale,” says Michael J. Fischer, a professor of computer science. “If there’s going to be another institution called Yale, I think we need to have a real discussion.”
