Darcy and I are both “Harvards.” I am thrilled that my fellow alum is bright, committed, and wants to be a Congressman.
BUT
Darcy needs to do something about the “her image” thing.
When Darcy ran for Congress before, Congressman Reichert made an issue … with lots of help from the Seattle Times … of Darcy not having a “real” Harvard Ec degree.
Of course that claim was bullshit. Any Harvard knows that degrees from “the College” are highly individualized. Her degree, comp sci with a focus in economics, is far easier to explain than my own degree in biology with a focus in history of religion. I even certificated in California as a photographer because my Harvard degree included a focus in photography.
Darcy’s problem is not with her degree and not with her smarts.
Once we graduate any Harvard not living in some sort of bubble learns not to brag about being a Harvard. Even here in academe, the only folks I know who wear Veritas blazers are folks whose self image badly needs that help.
Darcy’s fund raising letter, combined with an earlier letter extolling herself as an expert on Afghanistan, come across as narcissism.
What voters does she think she is addressing? Are nerds more under represented in Congress than teachers? I wonder how many Boeing machinists, workers at Everett’s Navy base, retired military, or even Microsoft grunts feel an urgent need to be represented by a Nerd?
