Friday night I went with about 1000 friends to hear speeches on our economy.
The speakers were Maria Cantwell and Elizabeth Warren, probably the most outspoken leaders for reform of our management class excesses.
Professor Warren was spectacular. For the first time I heard a major speaker support the PUBLIC UNIVERSITY. Her tale of rising from a janitor’s daughter, working as a waitress, getting federal loans to become a teacher, Teaching special needs kids, going to law school (more federal help), and finally ending up in Cambridge at THE law school was inspiring.
Warren has the gonads to defend academia in the best possible way … as an example!
Sadly, as usual, there were no familiar faces from the UDub faculty.
In the interest of full disclosure I contributed to both campaigns … and I am not even a Democrat! My $40 was the price of hearing a great lecture and showing support for a colleague trying to do things in the real world!
Call me a naive but I would love to know if any other faculty were there.
