Great news, the UW Huskies beat the Cal Bears! But, while that was happening, our education system keeps taking more cuts and It may scare some of you to read this report about educational strife leading to a real strike.
No Going Back On Monday Strike
UNIVERSITY teachers declared that there is no going back on their planned one-week warning strike following the government’s refusal to accede to their demands. The union coordinator , Prof Akin Ajisegiri, accused the government of insensitivity to issues of national importance.
The university teacher recalled that the goal of enhancing the educational system to meet national developmental challenges requires that the governments peg the educational budgets at not lower than 26 percent by United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). He regretted that the government had chosen to opt out of such developmental policy.
“While even emerging nations have strived to meet this target, tour government has chosen the priority of not fulfilling this simple obligation. The question could be asked, ‘Does the government see the connection between an uneducated citizenry and social insecurity and our collective vulnerability?’ The union therefore calls on all well-meaning citizens to prevail on the government to live up to its responsibility .”
Key areas of the non-implementation of the agreement include university funding, payment of earned allowances and 70 years retirement age for academics of the professional cadre.
