By Katherine Long, Seattle Times Incoming University of Washington President Michael Young will make $550,000 a year in base salary, plus $193,000 a year in deferred compensation, payable after five years.
The contract was approved Monday morning by the UW’s Board of Regents.
He’ll also make $46,500 in retirement benefits and receive a $12,000 auto allowance, bringing his total package to $802,000 a year — about $100,000 less than his predecessor, Mark Emmert.
Currently, Young, the president of the University of Utah, makes a base salary of $348,000 in his Utah post. In 2009-10, he reached a five-year anniversary with the school and received a lump-sum $375,000 payout that boosted his salary to $723,000 for that one year. That retention incentive was paid through private donations.
Presidential salaries have been a sore point for some lawmakers, faculty members and the public. Young’s predecessor, Mark Emmert, was at one point the second-highest-paid public university president in the country. He made a base salary of $620,000 and deferred compensation of $250,000.
Young is scheduled to start his new job July 1. At that time, interim president Phyllis Wise will return to her position as provost of the university.
