Some months ago I went to a Beck rally armed with faux pellet guns .. gifts to the crown, intended to make a point. I was taken seriously by the Beckies, even invited in (at their cost) to hear the great man speak.
But some gun totin liberal friends, including faculty colleagues, tried to scare me off, worried that if all I had was a faux gun, some Becky would shoot me. I was asked how would I defend myself with a faux gun? I got the ideas that may friends believed a real gun acts as a force field like the devices on Startrek,
Now, from the site of the Arizona Massacre, there is a story that realizes my fears about an armed populace.
Joe Zamudio was one of the brave men who brought Jared Lee Loughner tackled after his attempted assassination of Gabby Giffords. His story is chilling as much as it is brave. Mr. Zamudio was in a nearby drug stotre, buying cigarettes when he heard the shots. He tells the story on Fox and Friends.
“I came out of that store, I clicked the safety off, and I was ready…I had my hand on my gun. I had it in my jacket pocket here. And I came around the corner like this.” (showing the gun in hand, safety off. He saw someone holding a gun, “And that’s who I at first thought was the shooter, I told him to ‘Drop it, drop it!’ ” Zamudo, who has no formal training in use of a gun, much less in dealing with a gun fight, pushed gun man against the wall, fortunately not needing to shoot another brave sould who had the courage to grab Loughner’s gun.
Imagine the gore if Joe had been carrying his own glock and had attempted to use it.
Of course the Arizona Republicans see all this a a need for new laws allowing college and university faculty members to be able to carry concealed weapons on campus. How safe would that make us all!
Better yet, maybe the Guardian Angels would like to start college chapters and faculty with berets could patrol the University of Arizona just the way Guardian Angels have volunteered to replace the cops in Camden, New Jersey! Silva’s group has tried to offer there services here before and they, at least are unarmed! Would berets be a better shield against gund then more guns?
I think the American idea that guns protect against guns is on a par with the use of crosses to protect against vampires or the sanctification of papal blood.
Faux guns are safer.
Did you know that a “Becky” or sometimes “beccie” is London slang for “Jewish slut” … not a nice word at all.
Never heard that before. Frankly, if the issue is which is more disgusting, I think whore making as living off of sex is a lot more acceptable to me than a hate monger like Beck.
