The speech is part of an article in the Chronicle on the annual conference of higher-education government-relations professionals. The consensus everywhere in the US seems to be that the only interest of the public is on increasing graduation rates. There is no concern for quality.
This seems to me to be a fairly accurate view of where we all are, with two exceptions: football and Harvard. The public, or at least the politicians, seem to be eager to support elitism in both public collegiate athletic departments and private (but largely federally funded) elite colleges.
Where does that leave the UW? According to one ranking service we are #14 in the US and #16 in the world, ranked by academic standards. It is also important to note that we rank just below the premier private schools in the US and actually above schools like Johns Hopkins, Duke, Emory, Vanderbilt, Brandeis, Cornell, ….
As for WORLD standings, the UW’s “16” puts us above all other world universities except Oxford and Cambridge! We do MUCH worse, however, in football.
