Something’s rotten in Oklahoma

McCurtain County is a rural county (pop. 31,000) in the southeast corner of Oklahoma.

It became a focus of national news coverage when a hidden microphone picked up the sheriff, jail administrator, a sheriff’s investigator, and a county commissioner discussing lynching black people and murdering local newspaper reporters who were exposing corruption and misfeasance in the sheriff’s office (see details here).

The video below is a CBS News segment about 22 minutes in length. According to Wikipedia, on June 18, 2024, the sheriff “lost his bid for re-election, earning just 18.26% in the Republican Primary.”
